Review: Heart of Iron by Ashley Poston

Series: Heart of Iron #1

heart of iron -ashley postonSeventeen-year-old Ana is a scoundrel by nurture and an outlaw by nature. Found as a child drifting through space with a sentient android called D09, Ana was saved by a fearsome space captain and the grizzled crew she now calls family. But D09—one of the last remaining illegal Metals—has been glitching, and Ana will stop at nothing to find a way to fix him.

Ana’s desperate effort to save D09 leads her on a quest to steal the coordinates to a lost ship that could offer all the answers. But at the last moment, a spoiled Ironblood boy beats Ana to her prize. He has his own reasons for taking the coordinates, and he doesn’t care what he’ll sacrifice to keep them.

When everything goes wrong, she and the Ironblood end up as fugitives on the run. Now their entire kingdom is after them—and the coordinates—and not everyone wants them captured alive.

What they find in a lost corner of the universe will change all their lives—and unearth dangerous secrets. But when a darkness from Ana’s past returns, she must face an impossible choice: does she protect a kingdom that wants her dead or save the Metal boy she loves?

May the stars keep you steady. And the iron keep your safe.

Science fiction at its best, Heart of Iron has notes of action, romance and intrigue in this Anastasia retelling!

Ana and her crew of misfits aboard the ship Dossier were a wonderful found family that reminded me a lot of Melissa Lander’s Starflight series. From the spunky Ana with a heart for non-humanoid individuals to her Metal boy, D09, and ambitious pilot Jax with some secrets of his own, I thought this was a unique (enough) cast of characters. The format of the novel was easy to get through as it alternates between most of the main characters’ POVs, although the downside is having rather short chapters at times before it’s onto the next person.

Although I would categorize this book in science fiction, there’re elements of fantasy embedded. Set in what is known as the Iron Kingdom where 3 different planets have aligned together, they worship a Goddess who’s been said to have vanquished a Great Darkness a thousand years ago. And as the 1000th year approaches, they’re awaiting a new Saviour to come and do it once again – which you can probably guess, sounds rather familiar with other fantasy tropes.

In some other places, it felt particularly reminiscent of Star Wars. For example, the interactions and characteristics of D09 and E0S reminded me of C3P0 and R2D2, respectively. I absolutely loved it as these non-humanoid characters were given such distinctive personalities (or close enough, in the case of a non-speaking, bleeping-only bot). Sometimes I felt like I looked more forward to their POVs as their human counterparts weren’t always as exciting.

Action abounded and their mysterious quest to unearth what happened to their kingdom’s royal family years ago was definitely intriguing. I think the middle just lacked good pacing in places, and certain plot points were predictable, especially if you know and love the original story of Anastasia. I did admire Ashley Poston’s ability to weave this story as both something unique and completely hers while keeping to some things found in Anastasia, which can be hard to do it justice.

I wasn’t expecting the love interest to be Di (D09) at first, thinking Robb, the Ironblood Ana runs across on her journey to unearthing the secrets of a lost ship, would fit the bill more. But there’s the diversity in relationships as Jax and Robb have something cute going on. Di and Ana’s relationship was a little bit harder to swallow at first (he is a Metal, after all), but it grew on me and I’m totally rooting for them.

She didn’t know who she would be without him, and she never wanted to know. Her heart beat, and his wires hummed, and they were Ana and Di – and there were no words for that.

All in all, it’s still a fun and enjoyable read and I look forward to seeing what comes next from this series – especially from that ending!

If you’re fans of Melissa Landers and Amie Kaufman/Meghan Spooner’s books, I would definitely recommend this for you.

Overall Recommendation:
Heart of Iron takes the great things of both fantasy and science fiction and weaves together a story about found families, your fate and the lengths we go to save the ones we love. As story retellings go, I thought it was a unique spin on Anastasia while keeping to some original material that added to the overall space setting and plot. Fans of YA science fiction should not be disappointed! I can’t wait to see what’s in store next!

The ABC Book Challenge ~ A

I’ve been meaning to get into more fun and interesting posts on this blog to give some diversity and to share myself more with you.

I’ve had the honour of seeing so many other amazing bloggers out here, sharing their passions and overall, themselves. One of the cool posts I wanted to join in on was the ABC book challenge. I’ll be listing and explaining some cool titles I’ve read and want to read starting with a certain letter each week!

While I do not know the original creator for this, I have seen this posted by Sofii (A Book. A Thought) and Tiana (The Book Raven ). Check out their sites ’cause they are amazing!

So let’s start with “A”, shall we?

Memorable titles starting with “A”

Aftermath by Kelley Armstrong: I’m a sucker for well done mysteries that don’t have obvious culprits from the start. While the premise of the book is very realistic in this day and age, I found it wasn’t just a simple story that glorified the horrors faced in school shootings but explored the concept from all angles without an underlying bias. I think it’s an excellent story for teenagers (and older people, of course) to read and discuss!

Alice in Zombieland by Gena Showalter: Yes. An Alice in Wonderland retelling. Of course this is on the list. And oddly enough, Alice + zombies make for a great combination. With hot males and kickass fighting against – you guessed it – zombies, it’s a fun story that gets your heart pounding and out of the seriousness of this world.

All Things New by Lauren Miller: I love every Lauren Miller book I’ve read and this was no exception. A little darker than the others, it’s no less thought provoking as this book dived into deeper concepts such as the masks we wear and the invisible bruises we carry on the inside. This is a hidden gem that should be read by a wider audience!

Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins: I’m more picky when it comes to YA contemporaries but this book was a fun read of young love in the beautiful city of Paris. Whether this makes you wanna travel to the City of Lights (like I did) or swoops you in on an emotional rollercoaster ride, I thought this was a cute, summer read.

Ash Princess by Laura Sebastian: This debut novel surprised me, although its premise wasn’t anything particularly original. I liked the resilience of the protagonist and can’t wait for more in this trilogy.

Titles I want to read starting with “A”

All the Bright Places by Jennifer Niven: I always thought this sounded like it would end sadly but I do want to give it a try someday. I feel like always reading happy endings aren’t necessarily realistic, as long as this ends in a bittersweet way and not just plain horrible for everyone involved.

Allied by Amy Tintera: The conclusion to the Ruined trilogy is a definite must-read! I’ve just yet to find time to get to this on my TBR unfortunately.

Archenemies by Marissa Meyer: I don’t think this title should be of any surprise as Marissa Meyer’s new Renegade series has had everyone in a twist. I’m really looking forward to diving into it!

The Archived by Victoria Schwab: I’m a later player to some of Victoria Schwab’s works, although if you can believe it, I have had her books on my TBR for years even before her more recent YA and adult books exploded into such fame. I cannot wait to read more from her.

The Astonishing Color of After by Emily X.R. Pan: I’m currently listening to this one on audiobook (I know right?!), and the narrator makes it all the more fun. I liked the concept of colours mixed in with emotions as the protagonist navigates Taiwanese culture in the aftermath of her mother’s suicide. I can’t wait to finish!

That’s it for now! Leave a comment below if you have any other titles you thought was great that I missed 🙂 Until next time~

Hey everyone,

I haven’t done many book tags in the past but I really want to join in on the fun now that I have wayyy more free time on my hands. But before diving in on the other lovely book tags I’ve seen out there on other AMAZING blogs, I wanted to do one following the theme of my favourite classic. Which is also the theme of this blog.

You can guess it, right?

Rules:

  • Give credit and tag the original creator (Down the Rabbit Hole)
  • Answer all the prompts
  • Tag 3 others!
  • But most importantly, have fun!!

Alice: a dreamy book that you couldn’t stop thinking about

cinder -marissa meyerOh boy, I had to start with my protagonist, the girl who dreams and thinks like no one else in her society. This is a hard one.

If I had to choose just one, it’d have to be Cinder by Marissa Meyer.

Sometimes late at night when I can’t sleep or when I’m deep into a book slump, this book just pops into my head and reminds me there are wonderful stories out there that I have loved so dearly. Oh, and the forbidden romance always tugs at my heartstrings!

White Rabbit: a book you raced through and couldn’t put down

love, life and the list -kasie westThere are few and far between moments that I find myself going through a book in one sitting. So the ones that I do, especially ones that I absolutely adored, stick out a lot. Ah, how does one choose?

But for this one, I’d give it to Love, Life and the List by Kasie West. From the first pages of chapter one, I was hooked, namely because it was about a girl who was in love with her best friend. Uh, yeah! That’s totally my kind of romance trope. There went my day but I was ever so happy to have given it to such a lovely story.

Queen of Hearts: a book you just couldn’t like no matter how hard you tried

This may come as a shock to you but…this one goes to a very popular book/series. I have a feeling you’ve heard of it before. (P.S. please don’t hate – it’s just my honest opinion)

Yep, that’s right. It’s Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas. In my defense, I really tried to since so many others loved the book and following ones in the series. I have had many friends try to persuade me to try again. At the moment, I don’t know if I’ll give it another go, but I do remember the protagonist pissed me off too much.

Cheshire Cat: an unexpected book that continued to surprise you

shadow of the fox -julie kagawaI haven’t read anything by Julie Kagawa in a long time, mostly because her most recent series just didn’t pique my interest. So getting early access to Shadow of the Fox was an honour but I was skeptical about how I’d feel for the book.

Well. Let’s just say I was pleasantly surprised with the lush culture and pacing of the story. Now it’s one of the books I recommend the most since its publication!

Mad Hatter: a book you’d want to reread over and over again

the host -stephenie meyer

I must say, I’d have to put my favourite book of all time for this one. The Host by Stephenie Meyer never gets old for me, no matter how many times I’ve reread it.

There’s always something there that still surprises each time. Like a wow, how did I not see/make this connection before? or a omg, it’s still SO good. It’s somewhat of a guilty pleasure for me now, considering there’s judgment sometimes when I say it’s my favourite book in the post-Twilight world.

But I have no shame in declaring my love for this book ❤

Knave of Hearts: a book with a beautiful cover

Regardless of substance and how much I liked/disliked a book, there are a number of books out there that have just the most gorgeous looking cover. I know, they tell you not to judge a book by its cover, but let me tell you, it sure is a good marketing ploy to attract a wayward glance or two on the shelves.

For me, there are just so many books to choose from, so I’ve narrowed it down to 3.

Aren’t each of these just so pretty in their own way?

Caterpillar: a book for a leisurely summer day or cozy winter night

A book I’d cuddle up with sometimes does depend on the outside weather. So I’ve picked 2 books, one for the summer and one for the winter. (Yes, my mood very much decides for me what I want to read, even if I had a well thought out plan just right before!)

Summer: Save the Date by Morgan Matson

I love the summery atmosphere that Morgan always brings to her books! I had the pleasure of meeting her earlier this summer and heard all about her down to earth inspirations for stories.

Winter: This Savage Song by Victoria Schwab

In the winter, I love to cozy up under a warm blanket with a cup of hot tea next to me. With shorter days and earlier darkness, it’s fitting to read about dark worlds with shifting heroes and villains. What better than a Victoria Schwab book?
