Books on Vampires and Witches

Itโ€™s nearing the end of October! I canโ€™t believe time flies. But as spooky season (which oddly enough seems to be all month long) comes to a close, I thought Iโ€™d use this time to highlight some books about witches and vampires Iโ€™ve come across over the years.

Witchy reads

Serpent & Dove series by Shelby Mahurin

By no means an unfamiliar series, Shelby Mahurinโ€™s books have taken YA by storm since the first bookโ€™s release. Following a forbidden romance between a witch and a witch hunter, thereโ€™s magic, mayhem and a dose of emotional tears in this one.

The Witchlands series by Susan Dennard

Not your typical witch book, but it has โ€œwitchโ€ in the title and plenty of intriguing witchery skills among the broad cast of characters in this high fantasy series.

Secret Circle series by L.J. Smith

Probably the lesser known series by author L.J. Smith (which ALSO became a TV show that was unfortunately cancelled after 1 season), these books follow a young girl as she moves to a new place across the country, falling into a crowd of popular teens who may just be a coven of witches themselves.

Night World series by L.J. Smith

One of my favourite series on all creatures paranormal, in this collection of 9 stories features plenty of witches including two I loved, Spellbinder and Witchlight. When witches try to blend in with humans, things can go so horribly awry, especially when one falls in love with a human.

Kingdom of the Wicked series by Kerri Maniscalco

Witches in historical Sicily face off with some less than savory characters slinking out of – well – literal hell. With plenty of forbidden romance vibes and a mystery surrounding a beloved twinโ€™s death, this series only seems to get better and better.

The Witch Haven by Sasha Peyton Smith

The only one on this list I have yet to read, I have heard great things about this final witchy book and cannot wait to get to it on my TBR. Witch school AND set in early 1900s Manhattan? Sounds like everything I absolutely adore.

Vampire reads

Have to start off with an OG vampire series, regardless of what you think of it. Having taken the world by storm in the late 2000s, most people have heard of this name before and particularly changed the world of YA, especially in paranormal fiction.

The Beautiful series by Renee Ahdieh

Set in romantic New Orleans in the 1800s at a time where evil could literally lurk around any corner, this story is about a girl finding her way into the glitzy underworld where the attractive and mysterious guy who caught her eye may be more than meets the eye.

Blood and Ash series by Jennifer L. Armentrout

While they technically go by different names in this series, letโ€™s be honest, thereโ€™re vampires in this one, and they are just as attractive as the sparkly ones. Probably canโ€™t say much more than that, but yeah, VAMPIRES exist in this world (somewhere).

Blood of Eden series by Julia Kagawa

Technically I didnโ€™t quite manage to get through this series but in all honesty, it was too soon after the Twilight era to think more about vampires. But from what Iโ€™ve heard, this series follows a girl who turns into a vampire only to fight against something that can harm both human and vampire.

Night World series by L.J. Smith (again)

Okay, I had to put it in this list too since thereโ€™re some GREAT stories in the collection focusing more on the vampire protagonists. Some of my favourites include Daughters of Darkness and Huntress where one learns the cost of this immortal life, whether born or made into it.

The Vampire Diaries series by L.J. Smith

Expected this on the list too, right? Of course, canโ€™t forget the series made popular by its TV show! With a love triangle at the heart of it, Elena finds herself mixed up with vampire brothers Stefan and Damon as some of their past catches up with them all.

Vampire Academy series / Bloodline series by Richelle Mead

Vampire families, boarding schools, royalty and all the drama that ensues when mixing these elements together, these 2 companion series dives into the world of full blooded vampires and their half vampire protectors as they navigate various threats against their way of living.

Winterhaven series by Kristi Cook

Wherein the beginnings sound a lot like Twilight, a new girl moves into a new city and starts school there where the hottest guy seems to make an instant connection with her. But this school is hiding more secrets than at first glance, and our protagonist may just have some secrets of her own too.

Drake Chronicles by Alyxandra Harvey

When a line of a vampire-born family has a girl born into it, new and old enemies come out against this tight knit family, while unexpected allies come to their rescue. Particularly interesting are the forbidden/enemies-to-lovers romances between the vampires and vampire slayers as we follow a different vampire sibling in each book.

There are of course loads more out there, but these were the ones that made an impression on me.

If You Loved Geekerellaโ€ฆ

Happy Monday! Or should I say, yay, itโ€™s the start of a new week?

Regardless of how we feel about Mondays, I hope you had a restful weekend. Itโ€™s starting to get super chilly here and I think I have to put away my bike for the season soon. Definitely time to take out the warm sweaters, blankets and a comfy seat to curl up with a book!

So today I am bringing some recommendations for an old story that I fell in love with so long ago. Whether youโ€™ve read this one or not, hopefully youโ€™ll find one of these books interesting to take a look into.

About the book (review here)

Cinderella goes to the con in this fandom-fueled twist on the classic fairy tale.

Part romance, part love letter to nerd culture, and all totally adorbs, Geekerella is a fairy tale for anyone who believes in the magic of fandom. Geek girl Elle Wittimer lives and breathes Starfield, the classic sci-fi series she grew up watching with her late father. So when she sees a cosplay contest for a new Starfieldmovie, she has to enter. The prize? An invitation to the ExcelsiCon Cosplay Ball, and a meet-and-greet with the actor slated to play Federation Prince Carmindor in the reboot. With savings from her gig at the Magic Pumpkin food truck (and her dadโ€™s old costume), Elleโ€™s determined to winโ€ฆunless her stepsisters get there first.

Teen actor Darien Freeman used to live for consโ€”before he was famous. Now theyโ€™re nothing but autographs and awkward meet-and-greets. Playing Carmindor is all heโ€™s ever wanted, but the Starfield fandom has written him off as just another dumb heartthrob. As ExcelsiCon draws near, Darien feels more and more like a fakeโ€”until he meets a girl who shows him otherwise.

If you loved the Cinderella retelling aspect with a fun sci-fi twistโ€ฆ

โ€ฆthen you should definitely pick up Cinder by Marissa Meyer. I personally LOVE Cinderella retellings the most and if you havenโ€™t read this one yet, I love the creativity in our heroine, Cinder, and the additional plot lines that were added on top of the traditional Cinderella story. Both books are just SO creative!

If you loved all the geekiness and modern day sci-fi referencesโ€ฆ

โ€ฆthen Chaotic Good by Whitney Gardner is an amazing contender for all of your sci-fi geekiness and the realm of cosplaying. I personally have only touched the surface of cosplay and D&D but I loved learning so much about standing up for what you love, whether itโ€™s labelled โ€œcoolโ€ or not, and be proud of it. Even if sci-if geekiness isnโ€™t your thing, both books dive so well into the characters who love this so much that it really doesnโ€™t matter.

If you loved a romance between a celeb and an ordinary teenโ€ฆ

โ€ฆthen you should check out Fame, Fate, and the First Kiss by Kasie West! Have you ever wondered what it would be like for a โ€œnormalโ€ person to find themselves not only interacting with a celebrity of sorts, but being the object of their affection? Well, it definitely comes with some bumps (and paparazzi), but it makes for fascinating reading as they navigate such a relationship.

And thatโ€™s a wrap for this weekโ€™s If You Loved This! I would love to know what you think of some of these books if youโ€™ve read them, or if you feel thereโ€™s another book youโ€™d group in this series.

Thanks for stopping by! I always appreciate it

If You Loved Kingdom of the Wickedโ€ฆ

Itโ€™s time for another series of recommendations! This week I am focusing on Kingdom of the Wicked by Kerri Maniscalco. I absolutely adored this book when I finally picked it up earlier this year and wanted to share other reads with you that you may enjoy if you loved this one too! With adventure, mystery and a super slow-burn romance, thereโ€™s a little bit of something for everyone here.

Letโ€™s dig in, shall we?

About the book (review here)

Two sisters.

One brutal murder.

A quest for vengeance that will unleash Hell itselfโ€ฆ

And an intoxicating romance.

Emilia and her twin sister Vittoria are streghe โ€“ witches who live secretly among humans, avoiding notice and persecution. One night, Vittoria misses dinner service at the familyโ€™s renowned Sicilian restaurant. Emilia soon finds the body of her beloved twinโ€ฆdesecrated beyond belief. Devastated, Emilia sets out to find her sisterโ€™s killer and to seek vengeance at any cost-even if it means using dark magic thatโ€™s been long forbidden.

Then Emilia meets Wrath, one of the Wicked-princes of Hell she has been warned against in tales since she was a child. Wrath claims to be on Emiliaโ€™s side, tasked by his master with solving the series of womenโ€™s murders on the island. But when it comes to the Wicked, nothing is as it seemsโ€ฆ

If you loved the mystery surrounding the death of Emiliaโ€™s sisterโ€ฆ

โ€ฆthen you will absolutely adore Four Dead Queens! With the mystery surrounding who is killing the different ruling queens of the landโ€™s regions, the protagonists have to outsmart different players to prevent more tragedy from unfolding in this exciting standalone fantasy from Astrid Scholte.

If you loved the slow burn romance that should be forbiddenโ€ฆ

โ€ฆthen From Blood and Ash fits the bill. If you havenโ€™t already picked up this interesting first book of the series, you may enjoy the slow building attraction between the protagonist, the chosen Maiden of the land, and her Royal Guard member as a mysterious group tries to plot against her.

If you loved everything about witches and magicโ€ฆ

โ€ฆthen I would recommend Serpent & Dove as your next read! Our protagonist Lou is a witch in hiding but ends up getting tangled with the local witch huntsmen that brings equal amounts of trouble AND romance.
