FEBRUARY 25: THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BOOKS ADDICTS AND BOOK LOVERS (JILLIAN @ JILLIAN THE BOOKISH BUTTERFLY)

Prompts:ย First of all, how do you define a book addict and a book lover? Which one are you? What are the differences between the two? Do you think that being a book addict is harmful for a person? Are there merits to being a book addict vs a book lover?

Welcome to the last LTB of February, everyone! This month (which I know is naturally short) has just felt incredibly quick. But as the weather warms up, I can only hope that spring approaches. Digressions aside, an interesting topic today, and one that I haven’t thought about previously. Looking forward to what you all have to add in response!

Both of these terms sound similar to me. The first question that I think about when it comes to such comparisons is: is one actually a subcategory of the other? Are all book addicts book lovers? Or are all book lovers book addicts? At first glance, I want to say that all book addicts must be book loversโ€”or at least I would hope so. Otherwise it just sounds like a bit of Stockholm syndrome.

I hope I myself am not a book addict. Book-buying addict though? Possibly. But for me, a book addict would be someone who always has their nose in a book (Belle from Beauty and the Beast, maybe?) and perhaps ignores their surroundings a bit too much, moving beyond the border of book lover into book addict territory. I think the word addict insinuates that there’s some level of unhealthy attachment to books. I admit that sometimes I can ignore food or social interactions to finish a book, but I’m not sure that necessarily constitutes addiction.

In general, I haven’t really met someone who absolutely isn’t able to put down a book. And if you are able to make that choice and put it down, that constitutes control over your addiction, right? I’ve never found myself accusing anyone of being a book addict either, so I haven’t really seen someone with that much of an unhealthy relationship with books. Again, if the book lover/addict distinction is talking more about book buying, I think a lot more of us would fall into that (guilty) category.

I would love for everyone to be a book lover. While our community here is great, there are so many others who don’t appreciate books. I am a firm believer that there really is a type of book for everyone. Some love non-fiction, some love self-help books, maybe others only enjoy cookbooks, but I am almost certain that there is something for everyone, if you’re only willing to look out for it. So yeah, I think there are merits to being a book lover for sure! As for book addict, assuming it is just perhaps something along the lines of book fanatic, assuming a healthy relationship with your habits, I think is still perfectly acceptable.

What do you all think about the distinction between these two terms? Have I totally misinterpreted by thinking it’s related to reading? Is it much more related to purchasing? Let me know what you all think in the comments below!

Review: The Bridal Party by J.G. Murray

Sometimes friendship can be murder…

It’s the weekend of Clarisse’s bridal party, a trip the girls have all been looking forward to. Then, on the day of their flight, Tamsyn, the maid of honour, suddenly backs out. Upset and confused, they try to make the most of the stunning, isolated seaside house they find themselves in.

But, there is a surprise in store – Tamsyn has organised a murder mystery, a sinister game in which they must discover a killer in their midst. As tensions quickly boil over, it becomes clear to them all that there are some secrets that won’t stay buried…

This was a really exciting one! It was an incredibly (and I mean incredibly) fast read, barely 300 pages on my phone, and it was super exciting. Mostly a psychological thriller, it takes place as a macabre DnD-styled murder mystery game at a bridal partyโ€”or is it?

The Bridal Party takes place in a wooded area in New Jersey, at a beautiful cabin in the woods, known as the Herodias House. Based on a history of mythological witch hunts, the house itself is an exciting dark backdrop to this bridal party. The first mystery is where the maid of honour disappeared to before the trip, and just what waits in store for the five girls at this party. Slowly things get more and more out of handโ€”just who is responsible for all this?!

Questions

  1. If it doesnโ€™t smell bad, how long past the expiry date would you still drink the milk?

This is an absolutely hilarious first question, and I love it. It’s a good question! I would say milk is risky, it really does go bad quite quickly especially if it’s under-refrigerated or left out. I don’t have the best nose, so actually I can’t smell spoiled milk that well (unless it’s really bad). One easy way to tell is to poor it out and see if it’s lumpy at all thoughโ€”that definitely means it’s gone bad. Taste some to make sure before putting spoiled milk into any food! I’d say a couple of days past expiry is already very risky.
  2. Whatโ€™s your opinion on Wordle?

I usually don’t buy into any hype or trendy things. So I was resistant to starting Wordle for the longest time. That being said, I was bored one day and I tried it. I then realized you can only play once a day, which I found to be very low commitment (something I like nowadays during my busy life). It is fun! I don’t really understand the hype still though. It’s essentially hangman and mastermind combined, if you’re familiar with those two. I like the game, but definitely confused why it has blown up the way it has.
  3. If I stole your phone and changed the lockscreen, whatโ€™s the worst thing I could change it to?

Probably some embarrassing picture of me. Close-up of some insects or something gory would also be awful. Mine is currently a picture of my dog, whom I love dearly.
  4. How do you feel about the smell of cigarettes?

Absolutely not. Tobacco or even marijuana smoke, I’d really rather not. I don’t think I have the worst reaction to it compared to some people, but I definitely don’t enjoy it and it makes me feel a bit nauseous.
  5. Do you like the scent of rain, or does it smell like misery?

Petrichorโ€”I definitely love it! It smells earthy and fresh and reminds me new growth and something alive. It really reminds me that the earth is alive and that nature is at work even when sometimes the city just feels so cold. I don’t think I have ever thought of the rain as misery, though sometimes being stuck inside because of the rain when you were planning on going out can be quite miserable. The scent of rain is great though!
  6. When was the last time you broke the law, and are you proud of it?

I decline to disclose. Haha, just kidding. I’m sure I broke some speeding law or something most recently. I’m not particularly proud of it, but I don’t think I consider it of much importance either. Speeding laws are meant to be keeping us as a community safe, and if you’re driving safely 5 km over the limit, I don’t really think anyone is put in danger…even though you’re technically breaking the law.
  7. What do you do when you canโ€™t fall asleep?

I don’t usually have a problem with this but I think I end up watching YouTube videos or reading something. Tiring out my eyes is an easy way to just make me lie down and close my eyes. And when those things happen in the dark, I tend to fall asleep soon after.
