A lifelong reader of all things YA and books with heartfelt moments that punch you with all the feels. Currently expanding my reading interests to encompass anything that makes me feel deep and resonate with the characters
Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.
Hi friends! The air is already frosty here and boy, do I not like the hint of snow in November. Iโm just not ready! But in any case, letโs sit back and warm ourselves with some book recommendations.
This week, weโre looking at books that I would recommend if you liked X topic. Seeing as I struggle to find 10 books you generally may like from just one book or narrower topic, I thought Iโd do some meta list for this weekโs topic.
If youโve been around the blog for a while, you may have noticed Iโve been doing an โIf You Loved Thisโฆโ series for the last few months. While I have plenty of more books and topics Iโve yet to put out, here is the collection of posts Iโve done for this series so far.
Karina lost everything after a violent coup left her without her kingdom or her throne. Now the most wanted person in Sonande, her only hope of reclaiming what is rightfully hers lies in a divine power hidden in the long-lost city of her ancestors.
Meanwhile, the resurrection of Karinaโs sister has spiraled the world into chaos, with disaster after disaster threatening the hard-won peace Malik has found as Faridโs apprentice. When they discover that Karina herself is the key to restoring balance, Malik must use his magic to lure her back to their side. But how do you regain the trust of someone you once tried to kill?
As the fabric holding Sonande together begins to tear, Malik and Karina once again find themselves torn between their duties and their desires. And when the fate of everything hangs on a single, horrifying choice, they each must decide what they value mostโa power that could transform the world, or a love that could transform their lives.
TW: grooming, depression/thoughts of suicide, anxiety, self mutilation
A Psalm of Storms and Silence picks up right where its predecessor left off with Karina out of her throne and Malik feeling betrayed. But where the first book was all fire and plot with the Solstasia challenges, this second focused very much on Malik and Karinaโs characters.
Split into dual POVs like book 1, most of the book has Malik and Karina separated in their respective corners of the world. Karina is on the run while Malik is apprenticed to Farid back in her home kingdom, Ziran. I have nothing against character-driven stories. Some of my favorite books this year are in fact character-driven, particularly contemporaries. But letโs be honest, nothing much happens in this book.
Itโs almost the end of the week and for that I am grateful. Itโs been super busy at work with a major deadline looming but this is why I love audiobooks now. The ability to still โreadโ during lull times is absolutely fantastic and I donโt feel like I never have the chance to read even thought my to-do list every morning seems so long.
That being said, Iโm currently doing a buddy read on, well, this next book that I wanted to offer some recommendations for. While I havenโt yet finished the whole book (but I will soon!), I feel I can offer up some good reads if you adored These Violent Delights.
About the book (review to come!)
The year is 1926, and Shanghai hums to the tune of debauchery.
A blood feud between two gangs runs the streets red, leaving the city helpless in the grip of chaos. At the heart of it all is eighteen-year-old Juliette Cai, a former flapper who has returned to assume her role as the proud heir of the Scarlet Gangโa network of criminals far above the law. Their only rivals in power are the White Flowers, who have fought the Scarlets for generations. And behind every move is their heir, Roma Montagov, Julietteโs first loveโฆand first betrayal.
But when gangsters on both sides show signs of instability culminating in clawing their own throats out, the people start to whisper. Of a contagion, a madness. Of a monster in the shadows. As the deaths stack up, Juliette and Roma must set their gunsโand grudgesโaside and work together, for if they canโt stop this mayhem, then there will be no city left for either to rule.
Perfect for fans of The Last Magician and Descendant of the Crane, this heart-stopping debut is an imaginative Romeo and Juliet retelling set in 1920s Shanghai, with rival gangs and a monster in the depths of the Huangpu River.
If you loved the dark Romeo and Juliet retellingโฆ
โฆthen Rosamund Hodgeโs Bright Smoke, Cold Fire (Goodreads) may totally be up your alley! In a world thatโs in peril of a ghastly, fatal end, rival clans share whatโs left of the city, but things go awry when Romeo and Juliet set off a chain of events that lead to unveiling some serious issues in the streets of their beloved home. More dark fantasy than romance, this book laid out some complex world building that is fitting with the lyrical prose of Chloe Gongโs Shanghai.
If you loved the 1920s gangsters in the city settingโฆ
โฆthen The Last Magician(Goodreads) has to be your next stop! As this book is apparently even marketing towards this book, you must know itโs good. Set in 1900s New York City, we follow our time-travelling protagonist Esta as she joins a crew to pull a grand old con and heist against a group of powerful people. Little do they know, she will betray them all, but at the risk of falling for her enemy, the magician she came to rob.
If you loved the Asian fantasy elementโฆ
โฆthen you will enjoy Flame in the Mist (Goodreads) by Renee Ahdieh. I know there are many books now that are out in YA fitting this theme, but I had to include this book in here. Steeped in Japanese lore in the time of samurai and imperial clans, this story about a girl proving her worth by going undercover to get revenge on the clan who attacked her is every bit alluring as it is romantic. I was drawn into their culture, their language and their ways, very much like I feel for the lush setting aptly described in These Violent Delights.
And there you have it, friends! A little bit for everyone depending on why you may have enjoyed Chloe Gongโs debut that has soared to the top charts since its release. I canโt wait to finish it but I already feel such good things about it. I hope these other reads help tie you over until the next book comes out.
Look out for the sequel, Our Violent Ends, coming out November 16!
