Winter Binge – YA Books Adapted into TV Shows

I don’t know what part of the world you’re reading from, but here it’s been a pretty cold winter lately. We had the hugest snowstorm last Monday in the last 20+ years and were literally buried under snow.

So what does one do on days like that where it’s too cold (or impossible) to go outside?

Why, let’s binge some fun shows, right? And what would be better than a show that is based off of books that were amazing?

Here are a number of TV shows that have been more recently adapted from popular YA novels. Unfortunately I’m not sure where you can watch them based on where you live, but hopefully one or two or these are accessible and pique your interest for a particularly cold winter day for bingeing!

One of Us Is Lying [2021-] (Karen M. McManus)

A brain, an athlete, a princess, a criminal, and a “basket case” walk into detention – but only the first four make it out alive.

An update from Karen McManus recently saying that this show is coming to all international Netflix platforms so if you’re outside of the US, I’m super excited for more audiences to see this. You can read our review of the book here.

Let’s Talk Bookish – Do Bloggers Owe Their Readers and Vice Versa?

Letโ€™s Talk Bookish is a weekly meme, hosted byย Rukky @ Eternity Booksย &ย Dani @ Literary Lion,ย where they discuss certain topics, share their opinions, and spread the love by visiting each othersโ€™ posts.

JANUARY 21: DO BLOGGERS OWE THEIR READERS AND VICE VERSA? (Rukky @ Eternity Books)

Do bloggers owe their readers anything? Do bloggers deserve anything from their readers? Do you think thereโ€™s a specific etiquette that bloggers/readers should follow when interacting? Do you as a blogger pressure yourself to provide certain things to your readers? Do you do certain things when you read a blog post?

Welcome to another of LTB here at DTRH! Today’s topic is suggested by none other than the co-host of this weekly meme, Rukky! If you aren’t already following her over on her blog, please do. The topic today is pretty interesting, and certainly something to discuss. Can’t wait to hear what all of you have to say about it! I have a feeling I know what the general trend will be, but theoretically and practically are not always the same…

I’d say in general, no. There. Easy? Done. Just kidding.

But obviously I wouldn’t want readers to feel like they owe me anything, and therefore I wouldn’t want to owe others in the same way. The golden rule sort of applies here, right? If I don’t expect anything from my readers, I hope the readers don’t expect too much from me either. To the level of owing especially, I hope not. There are certainly things out of common courtesy or convention that we’ll do for each other, but beyond that, I don’t think anything is completely written in stone.

I, personally, as a blogger want to provide interesting and engaging content as often as I can here at DTRH (I’m sure Andge would agree). That being said, I try not to feel too much like I owe my readers something. After all, this is supposed to be a fun activity and how fun is it really if I’m always fettered by expectations and what I owe? As much as I try to give the readers what they want, I try my best not to place overly heavy expectations on myself. Otherwise, I run the risk that it stops being fun and that would really be a shame.

I think bloggers do deserve something from the readers…basic respect! I don’t think I have any more expectations beyond common courtesy and you all have been great so far! I don’t think I would have wanted to continue if it weren’t for your kind words and continued support. I only have good things to say about the readers here at DTRH. As such, beyond common courtesy, I don’t really have much “specific etiquette” that I really expect!

I certainly do have a couple of things that I feel like I “must” provide to my readers, but they’re probably much more of my own expectations of myself rather than anything I have actually heard from a reader. That being said, if there’s ever anything you want us to do here at DTRH, definitely let us know!

As for what I do when reading other’s posts, I don’t think I do anything in particular. I do try and comment and engage whenever I can though, but I have no expectations of others doing the same if they don’t want to! Again, I wouldn’t want it to become some sort of expectation. Isn’t everything just for fun and interest?

Let’s Talk Bookish – Do Book-Buying Bans Work For You?

Letโ€™s Talk Bookish is a weekly meme, hosted byย Rukky @ Eternity Booksย &ย Dani @ Literary Lion,ย where they discuss certain topics, share their opinions, and spread the love by visiting each othersโ€™ posts.

JANUARY 14: DO BOOK BUYING BANS WORK FOR YOU? (Jillian @ Jillian the Bookish Butterfly)

The book community is full of consumerism. People want to not just read their favourite books, but own them as well. Sometimes this can getโ€ฆa little out of hand. How do you control your spending/buying books you donโ€™t have time to read? Does setting a book buying ban work for you? How long do you usually ban yourself for?

Welcome to another LTB here at DTRH! Today’s topic is certainly interesting, and I always love hearing about different strategies the community has to tackle the same problem. Definitely let me know what you all do in the comments below!

I personally don’t have the hugest problem with buying too many books. I’m a fairly frugal person so I tend not to buy anything if I don’t have to. That being said, of the things I do like to buy, books would definitely be way up there. So I suppose, proportional spending-wise, books do probably take up way more of the budget.

I think I’m generally financially responsible though, so money-wise it isn’t the biggest deal. But bookshelf space definitely is a big deal. Honestly, that’s probably the biggest deterrent for me not to buy booksโ€”where would I even put it?! So I guess it’s not exactly a book-buying ban, but more of a self-restraint to save my bookshelf space

I often self-restrict from going to the bookstore too often, as that is often a big trigger for me to “unintentionally” buy booksโ€”I’m sure many of you can relate to that. Lately, with the whole world situation, it hasn’t been the biggest deal, as it isn’t recommended to go out anyway. So I suppose for me it isn’t really a book-buying ban as much as it is a bookstore-going ban.

I don’t think I’ve ever set an actual book-buying ban before for myself, though I have definitely resisted buying many a book at the bookstore before. I’m not sure a ban would work for me, since I doubt I would adhere to it on any sort of time basis. I much prefer to just overall buy books less, rather than have periods of time where I can buy unrestrictedly versus times where I can’t.

One thing that actually does help me get over this book-buying is by buying books for friends! I get the feeling of buying a book, it doesn’t take up my bookshelf, and a friend is happy to receive the book. It’s a win-win all around, except for maybe my wallet. But it does solve the “buying too many books” problem a tiny little bit. (Unless money is your main issue!)

What do you all do to stop yourselves from overconsumption of books? Do let me know below!
