Let’s Talk Bookish is a weekly meme, hosted by Rukky @ Eternity Books & Dani @ Literary Lion, where they discuss certain topics, share their opinions, and spread the love by visiting each others’ posts.
JANUARY 21: DO BLOGGERS OWE THEIR READERS AND VICE VERSA? (Rukky @ Eternity Books)
Do bloggers owe their readers anything? Do bloggers deserve anything from their readers? Do you think there’s a specific etiquette that bloggers/readers should follow when interacting? Do you as a blogger pressure yourself to provide certain things to your readers? Do you do certain things when you read a blog post?
Welcome to another of LTB here at DTRH! Today’s topic is suggested by none other than the co-host of this weekly meme, Rukky! If you aren’t already following her over on her blog, please do. The topic today is pretty interesting, and certainly something to discuss. Can’t wait to hear what all of you have to say about it! I have a feeling I know what the general trend will be, but theoretically and practically are not always the same…
I’d say in general, no. There. Easy? Done. Just kidding.
But obviously I wouldn’t want readers to feel like they owe me anything, and therefore I wouldn’t want to owe others in the same way. The golden rule sort of applies here, right? If I don’t expect anything from my readers, I hope the readers don’t expect too much from me either. To the level of owing especially, I hope not. There are certainly things out of common courtesy or convention that we’ll do for each other, but beyond that, I don’t think anything is completely written in stone.
I, personally, as a blogger want to provide interesting and engaging content as often as I can here at DTRH (I’m sure Andge would agree). That being said, I try not to feel too much like I owe my readers something. After all, this is supposed to be a fun activity and how fun is it really if I’m always fettered by expectations and what I owe? As much as I try to give the readers what they want, I try my best not to place overly heavy expectations on myself. Otherwise, I run the risk that it stops being fun and that would really be a shame.
I think bloggers do deserve something from the readers…basic respect! I don’t think I have any more expectations beyond common courtesy and you all have been great so far! I don’t think I would have wanted to continue if it weren’t for your kind words and continued support. I only have good things to say about the readers here at DTRH. As such, beyond common courtesy, I don’t really have much “specific etiquette” that I really expect!
I certainly do have a couple of things that I feel like I “must” provide to my readers, but they’re probably much more of my own expectations of myself rather than anything I have actually heard from a reader. That being said, if there’s ever anything you want us to do here at DTRH, definitely let us know!
As for what I do when reading other’s posts, I don’t think I do anything in particular. I do try and comment and engage whenever I can though, but I have no expectations of others doing the same if they don’t want to! Again, I wouldn’t want it to become some sort of expectation. Isn’t everything just for fun and interest?
We agree with you! While we don’t owe them anything, we hope they enjoy our content.
