Top Ten Tuesday: Comfort Reads

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

This weekโ€™s TTT is a little hard for me to narrow down because it begs the question: what constitutes as โ€˜comfortโ€™? Itโ€™s very subjective and differs from person to person. I mean, it may even differ within a person depending on the given time or mood.

Iโ€™m such a mood reader that it makes predicting what I read quite hard sometimes. I can be all over the place so I really try not to set hard rules for what I must read in a calendar or journal.

So when I think of โ€œcomfortโ€, I mostly lean into what I would read to help distract me when Iโ€™m tired or ill or in a bad mood. While some on this list may not seem to hold a common thread with the others, it honestly boils down to this one thing. Theyโ€™re easily digestible without too much brain power necessarily needed, and hold charactersโ€™ stories that I can root for and easily love, especially their love stories.

I want to ask if you agree, but then again, this is all super subjective so I will just give you my list and call it a day ๐Ÿ™‚

Letโ€™s begin!

1. Poison Study by Maria V. Snyder

Top Ten Tuesday: Recent First Lines

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

This weekโ€™s TTT is a freebie on book quotes. Iโ€™m not one to collect quotes from each book in detail, although I will highlight (in ebooks) quotes I found super interesting or well crafted for the context and story.

For that reason, Iโ€™ve chosen to highlight the first sentences of books Iโ€™ve recently finished reading or am currently reading. First lines are important as they help set the tone for drawing a reader in.

If youโ€™ve read some of these books, do you think the first line is a good representation for the rest of the book? If you havenโ€™t read these books, would you want to based on the first line?

Tell me what you think in the comments below!

1. A River Enchanted by Rebecca Ross

It was safest to cross the ocean at night, when the moon and stars shone on the water.

2. This Place is Still Beautiful by XiXi Tian

The predicted rain on the first day of summer never comes, meaning I can count on two things: my mother spending most of the morning in the garden, and Thom Froggett coming by the Sprinkle Shoppe for a double scoop of Rocky Road in a waffle cone.

3. Starry Eyes by Jenn Bennett

Spontaneity is overrated.

4. Rise of the Vicious Princess by C.J. Redwine

After tonight, the new hairstyle of Charis Willowthorn would be the only acceptable updo for a debutante to wear to a ball.

5. Portrait of a Thief by Grace D. Li

โ€œState your name for the record, please.โ€

6. Donโ€™t Forget Me by Judy Corry

Betting on my best friendโ€™s love life was getting expensive.

7. The Signs and Wonders of Tuna Rashad by Natasha Deen

The planets are in precise alignment, the moons are in their proper houses, and the auspicious signs canโ€™t be denied.

8. The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea by Axie Oh

The myths of my people say only a true bride of the Sea God can bring an end to his insatiable wrath.

9. Cinder & Glass by Melissa de la Cruz

I was meant to be listening to Claudine explain how best to pack for the move to Versailles.

10. The Song that Moves the Sun by Anna Bright

We begin at the center.

Did any of these first lines stick out to you?

I will admit, some of these were marvellous and some wereโ€ฆdifferent than what I anticipated the book to be. If you agree or disagree, let me know what you think!

Top Ten Tuesday: Books I was Excited to Get But Have Yet to Read

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

Itโ€™s REALLY starting to feel like summer here, like we skipped most of spring to get to sweltering heat that does NOT relent. So while Iโ€™m sweating buckets, letโ€™s reminisce about this weekโ€™s TTT topic: books I bought and still havenโ€™t currently read them yet.

That happens a lot to other people too, right?

I had so many books to choose from because itโ€™s sadly a thing I have? The books I own get the least priority to be read because ARCs and library books all have due dates. Darn you due dates.

I can probably come up with more excuses for why I am SO behind on books I own, but letโ€™s just dive into some of the ones I chose to admit to.

You can judge me, I fully give you my permission.
