Review: From Blood and Ash by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Series: Blood and Ash #1

A Maiden…

Chosen from birth to usher in a new era, Poppy’s life has never been her own. The life of the Maiden is solitary. Never to be touched. Never to be looked upon. Never to be spoken to. Never to experience pleasure. Waiting for the day of her Ascension, she would rather be with the guards, fighting back the evil that took her family, than preparing to be found worthy by the gods. But the choice has never been hers.

A Duty…

The entire kingdom’s future rests on Poppy’s shoulders, something she’s not even quite sure she wants for herself. Because a Maiden has a heart. And a soul. And longing. And when Hawke, a golden-eyed guard honor bound to ensure her Ascension, enters her life, destiny and duty become tangled with desire and need. He incites her anger, makes her question everything she believes in, and tempts her with the forbidden.

A Kingdom…

Forsaken by the gods and feared by mortals, a fallen kingdom is rising once more, determined to take back what they believe is theirs through violence and vengeance. And as the shadow of those cursed draws closer, the line between what is forbidden and what is right becomes blurred. Poppy is not only on the verge of losing her heart and being found unworthy by the gods, but also her life when every blood-soaked thread that holds her world together begins to unravel.

I’m sure I’m not the only one who came into this book due to the hype surrounding the series. So I will try to keep this short and concise because I’m sure someone out there already wrote their exact feelings somewhere.

Poppy, whose full name is so hard to pronounce and spell, can ultimately be described in two words: virgin and stubborn.

One, I have no idea why it’s the BIGGEST deal in this book, especially when it becomes VERY clear that she does not care about that aspect of herself very much if she had her way.

Top Ten Tuesday: Memorable Characters

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

Good morning everyone! I can’t believe it’s Tuesday again already. I feel like last week held so many things all at once for me so it kind of went by fast and slow at the same time. I dyed my hair for the first time ever (ahh!!) and I’m loving it. And I got to go to the drive in theater with my dog and it was just the best time. So it’s been a good week overall for me.

But onto books! This week’s TTT was initially Memorable Things Characters Have Said but…I never remember quotes very well, let alone what people say, so I will have to go with simply “memorable” characters who have stuck out to me all these years amidst the many books I’ve read.

1. Nancy Drew

We all know (I think) this famous young sleuth, but I grew up reading those iconic yellow spine hardcovers as a child and I wanted to BE Nancy. She’s daring and has the most intriguing adventures with her friends, which never ends badly for them it seems. Why wouldn’t I want to be her growing up?

If You Loved Daughter of a Pirate King…

Hello everyone! It’s Thursday and it’s an early weekend for me as I’m taking the day off tomorrow to go dye my hair at a salon (*whispers* I’ve never done that before in my life so hope it goes well).

But in the meantime, I leave with you today another fun segment of “If You Loved This!”.

Today’s book was Tricia Levenseller’s debut and was one of my first books introducing me more to the seafaring YA books out there. You can say I was pleasantly surprised! So what was the book about?

About the book (review here)

There will be plenty of time for me to beat him soundly once I’ve gotten what I came for.

Sent on a mission to retrieve an ancient hidden map—the key to a legendary treasure trove—seventeen-year-old pirate captain Alosa deliberately allows herself to be captured by her enemies, giving her the perfect opportunity to search their ship.

More than a match for the ruthless pirate crew, Alosa has only one thing standing between her and the map: her captor, the unexpectedly clever and unfairly attractive first mate, Riden. But not to worry, for Alosa has a few tricks up her sleeve, and no lone pirate can stop the Daughter of the Pirate King.
