This is the second and final book of the Six of Crows duology. Continuing from where we left off in the previous book, we are immediately thrown into the action and unending plots from our main protagonist, Kaz Brekker. Having been betrayed once again, and weakened from the great heist they pulled off in the first novel, does he and his motley crew have enough to recover? This was certainly an exciting journey for me, so much so that I dare say it was more exciting than the first one! Andge and I both agree on the 4.5 rating here.
Crooked Kingdom really takes off right from the ending of Six of Crows. Together, Kaz and his team now much retrieve what they have lost, in addition to setting up payback for being double-crossed. Once again, the team must put everything they have on the line to achieve the big lofty goals. Once again told through multiple POVs, we are taken through the layers and layers of Kaz’s plans, watching them either fail or succeed, never being able to predict the result. The characters have now grown and changed from their first adventure, and the stakes have now doubled. Overall this made for a very exciting adventure with an exciting (and emotional) ending, which I wouldn’t have predicted coming into this book.
The plot, which once again revolves around what is more or less a heist, was a great success. The way the author (through Kaz) is able to layer and layer complex plans on top of each other was truly one of the shining points of this novel. As a mystery/thriller lover, I definitely appreciated the suspense that was created by all the unknowns in the plan, and the constant heightening emotions as the plan was being executed.
Characters were once again great. I would say even better than the first book. The characters have grown and now that we have more of their complicated backgrounds, we can really being to explore more deeply into their characters and actions. Instead of spending a lot of the book giving us the backstory, this time we get to develop their relationships and increase character depth, something which I felt like was missing a bit in the last book. I definitely enjoyed this aspect of the second novel more.
The heist was great. May I am misremembering how the last one went, but I felt that this one was even more exciting than the last. Perhaps the stakes were higher or perhaps the plans were more complex and layered, but either way I enjoyed it way more in this one. If you are into these kind of heist plots, I highly recommend this series for you.
The only real knock I had was something about the ending that I didn’t quite agree on, but I could understand why I guess. It would be a pretty big spoiler, so I won’t give it away! But that is my only real reason why I didn’t give it a five star! That being said I still highly recommend this series if anything I said above interested you. Overall Recommendations
Crooked Kingdom is the second and final book in the Six of Crows duology. Once again we have our team of specialists embarking on yet another heist, continuing from where we left off last book. Kaz and his team has suffered a bunch of losses from being double-crossed and are now back more furious than ever for revenge and more. The complicated characters continue to develop more in this story, and their relationships as well. In a series of many many twists and turns in the plan, this book will surely lead you on an emotional roller coaster through its multiple POVs and clever writing. Highly recommend this sequel, especially if you already enjoyed the first one.
