Let’s Talk Bookish – What Makes You Pick Up a Book?

APRIL 16: WHAT MAKES YOU PICK UP A BOOK? (SUGGESTED BY RAFAELA @ THE PORTUGUESE BIBLIOPHILE)

Prompts: What makes you pick up certain books? Is a pretty cover enough? Do you check for good reviews? Is the synopsis important? Do you look for diversity or #ownvoices? Do you look for any checkboxes? Do you have autobuy authors?

Welcome to another week here at LTB! I love this topic, there are definitely many different reasons that make me pick up a book, but I know for certain that it follows a pattern (even if I don’t want to admit it!)

I think I mentioned it previously, but pretty covers is a big one. Even if I don’t judge a book by its cover, inevitably it’s the first thing I see, and the first step to drawing me in. Realistically, who is going to pick up each book off the shelf and read the synopsis before making a decision? I know myself, and I usually reach only to pick up books that seem to call out to me. Alternatively, a good title is also good enough to attract my attention, usually. Of course, before actually reading the book, I also read the synopsis to make sure the title/cover aligns with what kind of book I think it will be, and whether it will interest me overall or not.

If it’s a book online that I’m researching, then reviews do also come into play. Although, I do find that in general reviews aren’t always the most helpful unless it’s fairly unanimous. If some enjoyed it while others didn’t…then how am I supposed to know which category I fall under? Or worse, the egregious “I loved everything about it!!!! 2/5” reviews. What does that even mean?! Please tell me someone knows what I mean when I say those reviews haha.

Let’s Talk Bookish – Qualities of a Book Boyfriend/Girlfriend?

Let’s Talk Bookish is a weekly meme, hosted by Rukky @ Eternity Books & Dani @ Literary Lion, where they discuss certain topics, share their opinions, and spread the love by visiting each others’ posts.

APRIL 9: QUALITIES OF A BOOK BOYFRIEND/GIRLFRIEND? (Suggested by DANI)

Prompts: Do you have any book boyfriends/girlfriends? What makes you fall in love with them? Is there anything all your favorite book boyfriends/girlfriends have in common? Do you prefer they come from certain genres?

This is such a fun one, I can’t wait to see what everyone else who is participating says about this one. Unfortunately, I don’t think my own response will be that exciting, since I’m not really one to romanticize characters and wish they were real to be my boyfriend or girlfriend. If anything, I would want to be the character, rather than date them.

One of the first characters I definitely remember wanting to be, or to be friends with, was surprise surprise, Hermione Granger. Cliché right? Haha. I guess I just wanted to be smart, but also what I wouldn’t give to be a precocious child attending Hogwarts (as we all once dreamed at age 11). But I definitely never wanted to date her.

My favourite type of character to read about or read in the perspective of definitely follows a common trend. I tend to really get behind the strong female heroines who are breaking down social norms and facing the cruel world with their head held high. Something about the freedom in the way they live and approach their lives really inspires me. Characters like Evelyn from The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo or Sayuri from Memoirs of a Geisha, something about going through hardships and making it out through the fire – yes! And my most recent love, Audrey Rose Wadsworth from the Stalking Jack The Ripper series, simply brilliant.

Let’s Talk Bookish – Putting Off Books You Actually Want to Read

Let’s Talk Bookish is a weekly meme, hosted by Rukky @ Eternity Books & Dani @ Literary Lion, where they discuss certain topics, share their opinions, and spread the love by visiting each others’ posts.

APRIL 2: PUTTING OFF BOOKS YOU ACTUALLY WANT TO READ (SUGGESTED BY JILLIAN @ THE BOOKISH BUTTERFLY)

Prompts: Do you ever put off the books you actually want to be reading? What do you end up reading instead? Why do you put off the books that you would rather read for other stories? Do you treat reading books you’re excited as a reward?

Welcome to the first LTB of April, and happy Friday everyone! Or should I say Good Friday? Ha. Anyway, today’s topic is quite an interesting one, as it is inherently a bit ironic – would you not want to read your most anticipated books first?! But I think as a blogger, or just a lover of books, we all know this isn’t always the case.

So the simple answer is yes, I definitely do put off books that I actually want to be reading. I think there can be a multitude of reasons for this to happen. Recently I’ve been on pause reading a series that I have been really enjoying, kind of savouring the moment before finishing the last book and leaving the series behind me.

Normally I’d be full steam ahead but other books on hold came in that were more urgent, so I ended up putting it off, but it definitely has the added bonus of giving me a bit more time to relish the joy of reading the series – stay tuned to find out which one it is! Any guesses?

Anyway, I digress. As a book review blogger, I think the most obvious answer to why we put off books is the time constraints. An ARC review is due, or my borrowing term is coming to an end, or it’s almost time to return the book I borrowed from my friend – the list is literally endless for reasons for books to jump the queue in reading priority. I’m sure anyone out there who does reviews feels the same way, or at least knows what that’s like.

Other than that though, I personally don’t have many other reasons to be putting off books I want to read. After all, I mostly read to enjoy the book and if there’s something I want to read, I’ll generally try to read it as soon as I possibly can.

As for treating myself to a book as a reward…I don’t recall ever having done that. That being said, I have bought many a book for myself as a “reward”. Really, just finding excuses to justify my incessant book purchases. What can I say, I just love (buying, reading, talking about) books! Can anyone relate? Let me know in the comments below!

Happy April everyone! Remember to follow Rukky and Dani on their respective blogs, and feel free to submit any topics suggestions you might have to them as well. See you all next week!
